The difference between players who breeze through levels and players who restart constantly comes down to a handful of habits. 1. Read the board before your first move
The strongest habit in the game costs five seconds. Before pouring anything, count your empty tubes, spot which colors are spread across many tubes, and find the tube closest to completion. Your first three moves should come from that scan, not from whatever pour happens to be legal.
2. Never waste an empty tube on a whim
Empty tubes are the most valuable resource in Magic Sort. Every expert rule boils down to this: an empty tube spent must buy you something concrete — a freed buried color, a finished tube, or a new empty tube elsewhere. If a pour into empty space doesn’t achieve one of those, don’t make it.
3. Pour matching stacks together
When two or three segments of the same color sit stacked on top of a tube, they move as one pour. Setting up these combined pours is the main way to save moves. Before moving a single segment, check whether one more preparation move would let you move a whole stack instead.
4. Uncover the “majority” color first
Colors that appear near the top of many tubes are cheap to collect; colors buried at the bottom of several tubes are expensive. Early in a level, prioritize digging out the color that blocks the most tubes at once. Freeing it usually cascades into two or three easy follow-up moves.
5. Finish tubes to shrink the puzzle
A tube containing only one color is done — mentally remove it from the board. Each finished tube reduces the number of things you track, which makes the rest of the level easier to see. When you have a choice between two decent moves, prefer the one that gets a tube closer to finished.
6. Watch for dead configurations
The classic losing pattern: a color trapped under two different colors in every tube where it appears, with no empty tubes left. Once that happens, no sequence of legal moves can free it. Learn to see this trap forming two moves early — that’s the moment to change course, not after the board locks.
7. Use undo as a planning tool
Undo isn’t just for fixing mistakes — it’s for exploring. Try a line of three or four moves, see what the board looks like, and undo back if it worsens your position. 8. Sometimes, un-finish a tube
Counterintuitive but powerful: occasionally the winning move is pouring out of a nearly-complete tube to create working space. If one tube holds three segments of yellow and the fourth yellow is buried elsewhere, temporarily moving a yellow stack can unlock the whole board. Don’t treat almost-done tubes as sacred when space is tight.
9. Slow down when tubes fill up
The danger zone in any level is when empty space runs low. Early on, mistakes are cheap; late on, one careless pour can dead-end the puzzle. As the board fills, double-check every move: what does this pour bury, and can I still reach it afterwards? 10. Restart without regret
If a level has gone wrong, restart. Levels are short, and your second attempt — armed with knowledge of where the traps are — is usually dramatically faster than grinding out a rescue from a bad position. Speedrunners restart constantly; there’s no shame in it.
